Artisa Mae Moten, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist who combines the principles of neuroscience with traditional counseling techniques. Ms. Moten has over a decade of experience in education, corrections, and the department of human services. She is the founder and owner of Awakened Consulting Inc., a holistic mental health collective that specializes in nuerocounseling. Together with her partner, they co-founded PowerMoves 365, a non-profit which currently facilitates support groups coupled with body-based interventions for youth and families. In 2021, she started Black Wellness Magazine after seeing the effects of the pandemic on the black community.
Ms. Moten was captivated by the intricate relationship between the mind and body and how it shapes our experiences and overall well-being on mental health. This calling led her to pursue a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, with a focus on holistic approaches that integrate the mind, body, and spirit. Realizing how complex trauma and nutrition impeded her clients healing journey, she sought to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional-II (CCTP-II) and Certified Nutrition and Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP) to give her clients the best outcome possible.
Artisa Mae’s journey into holistic healing modalities began with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a technique that facilitates the processing and resolution of traumatic experiences. Acknowledging the interconnection of the three brains (Brain, Heart, Gut), Artisa Mae extended her proficiency to encompass HRV. This tool measures heart rate variability, evaluating and enhancing emotional regulation and stress resilience.
Strengthening her skill set, she pursued additional training in neurofeedback, a non-invasive approach that helps regulate brainwave patterns. Through neurofeedback, clients learn to optimize brain functioning, enhancing their emotional well-being and overall mental resilience.
Seeking to deepen her therapeutic toolbox further, She trained in brainspotting, a powerful modality that uses eye positions to access and process trauma and emotional distress stored in the brain and body. She understands that healing is a multifaceted process that requires attention to both the mind and body, as well as their interconnectedness.
Artisa Mae’s holistic approach extends beyond the therapy room. She educates through hosting workshops in the community, speaking on panels and conferences, and training businesses and organizations about the mind-body connection, empowering them to apply self-care practices and techniques in their everyday lives.
She actively engages in ongoing professional development, staying abreast of the latest research and advancements in mind-body therapies. Ms. Moten references the great Maya Angelou quote, "I do my best, because I'm counting on you counting on me." She is humbled and grateful to the Most High God for his favor and covering.
